REVIEW - BLACK MASS

Whitey (Jimmy) Bulger is the head of a mafia that focuses on South Boston and after becoming an FBI informant, can expand their "business" under the plans.
Jonnhy Depp plays Jimmy, a very threatening character, unpredictable and a mobster psychopath who after spending nine years in prison of Alcatraz, develops an uncontrollable hatred of informants.
For fans of Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands, Mad Hatter, Sweeney Todd and many others, will be a little disappointed, because the fantasy and horror "comic" are out here. The performance of Depp is very good and can distance himself from those comments about him always doing the same characters, so if you go see this movie because your favorite actor is on the cover, pass away.
Joel Edgerton plays John Connelly, Jimmy's childhood friend who covers up the crimes of Bulger, making him pass a small villain in the eyes of the FBI informant. He's the character who most resembles a mafia movie, constantly talks about protecting the family and have loyalty, and it can be more hated than Bulger.
Benedict Cumberbath plays Bill Bulger, Jimmy's brother and friend of John Connelly, a highly respected senator in his work that has just left within the plot. In fact their existence is more narrative grief than his screen presence.
One thing to have Don Corleone like protagonist, a character that even being a mobster, the audience sympathizes for their "philosophies", another thing is to focus on Whitey Bulger, a psychopathic gangster who practices every conceivable crime and whose only philosophy is to kill anyone who has 1% chance of being an informant. In conclusion, see the Jonny Depp get screwed, gives pleasure to those watching in many cases.
If the focus were in the character Coren Stoll, who begins to investigate the reasons they never arrested Jimmy, we would have a better clash between a guy fighting another inside FBI. Stoll is like the Jim Gordon in Gotham series, worth appearing so late on the scene.
The main enemy of the film is its length, it has two hours and his first hour could pass as an introduction of five minutes (as at the beginning of Watchmen), and it seems that the film really begins in the brand of first 60 minutes.
Like a mafia movie, I missed a family or a gang to confront Jimmy. Until a guy who's also mastering a Boston area with its own mafia, but he haven't an image of law and just was the reason for Bulger become an informant, reinforcing the idea of what the first sixty minutes should be make a brief indroduction.
I want to clarify that I liked the movie, I liked to see Jonnhy Depp as "villain", his performance was very good and you never know what he will do, and this helps to keep the public's curiosity. Also liked the John Connelly, for me he was the greatest villain of the plot, and the character of Benedict Cumberbatch, same with few appearances, managed in just one scene show that it also has part of the personality of his brother.
The script is very well written, the fights, arguments, monotone, and threats between the whole cast are very good. There are at last two threats made by Jimmy that deal a lot with the viewer.
In short, quite liked the film, both of performances as history and recommend to the mafia movie fans, drama and for those who wants to see an actor known for comic and accentric interpretations in a more serious and dangerous role.
